Red Fox

My absolute favorite picture from the entire Grand Teton / Yellowstone trip!
This red fox was a truly perfect photo subject, both for it's charm, the setting, and perfect filtered light! Surviving on a diet that includes rodents and other small animals, as well as insects, berries, plants, and carrion, foxes are obscenely adaptable creatures.
They have learned to thrive in just about every habitat, worldwide. In addition to their stunning appearance, we should be thankful for the wonderful rodent control these elegant creatures provide! Grand Teton NP, WY.

Sleepy Fox

Foxy Yawn

A beautiful red fox yawns after waking from a midday nap. I stumbled upon this handsome creature, mid-nap. After a short period of enjoying the fox-watching, he / she slowly woke up, stretched, and yawned multiple times before trotting off to hunt. Grizzly Twins

Although they will no doubt eventually part ways, these young adult grizzlies have decided to stick together for now. Grizzlies are often seen as terrifying hunters. Their power and speed are certainly not embellished, but grizzlies do have a tender side. From a distance, I spent hours watching these two meander across a field, often side-by-side. They frequently excavated the ground for rodents. The twins would periodically share affection in the way of a nudge or grunt and showed no hostility whatsoever. Yes, grizzly bears can be dangerous, but respect their space and always store food far from your tent and well-sealed when exploring grizzly country. Respect a grizzlies' space, and they will nearly always respect yours. Sadly, the news only reports the rare exceptions.

A Grizzled Profile

A young grizzly shows off it's massive profile. Look closely and take note of the porcupine quills covering it's snout. Lesson hard-learned. Coyote

Being such intelligent and adaptable creatures, I have an enormous amount of respect for coyotes. They are very quick to adjust their habits based on environmental changes, as well as human development. These canines eat a wide variety of food items, including mammals, reptiles, birds, fruit, and even vegetable matter. Not only are they prevalent throughout the desert, but coyotes thrive in the middle of large cities. Picture Rocks, AZ.

Fox in the Forest

Before dawn had broken, I encountered this fox trotting along the road with a ground squirrel in her jaws. Soon veering into the forest, she briefly paused to turn around before vanishing amidst the trees. Yellowstone National Park, WY.

Clever Coyote

I had always heard coyotes referred to as "tricksters," but wasn't convinced until this. Coyotes are too small for taking down bison. Even a pack with have trouble with a bison calf, yet this lone song dog passed right through the herd, behaving as if he/she were on the hunt. Yellowstone National Park, WY.
